Who Can Apply: US Citizens – Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors– All Majors
IMPORTANT: All Gilman applicants MUST be Pell Grant recipients or be eligible for a Pell Grant during the planned period of study abroad or credit-bearing internship.
IMPORTANT: Study abroad programs and credit-bearing internships must involve at least 3 weeks in a single country to be eligible (programs may involve more than one country if at least 3 weeks are spent in a single country).
Description: The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies and credit-bearing internships abroad. Such international experience is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. The scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grants.
IMPORTANT: Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program if their study abroad plans involve studying any of the following critical languages: Arabic (all dialects), Chinese (all dialects), Turkish, Persian, Languages of India and Pakistan, Korean, Russian
Program Preferences: The Gilman scholarship aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to:
• students with high financial need,
• students interested in studying in diverse countries, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia,
• students with diverse ethnic backgrounds; and
• students with disabilities.
Award Amount: Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $3,500.
National Deadline: October 2, 2018 This deadline is for spring 2019 and early applicants for summer 2019. For study abroad in summer 2019, fall 2019, and academic year 2019-20, the deadline will be in early March.
